This charming small town of 37,105 inhabitants was originally named San Miguel Arcángel or San Miguel de Hato Grande. The present name was adopted in 1901.

The patron saint for San Lorenzo is "Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes", celebrated on August 10.

San Lorenzo's mountainous terrain and valleys are the bases for fertile lands and prosperous agriculture.
